IRS Warns of New Email Phishing Scam (1)

The IRS and its state and industry Security Summit partners are warning tax practitioners about a new scam involving phishing emails purporting to be from state accounting and professional associations.

The Internal Revenue Service has received reports from practitioners who received fake emails aiming to collect recipients’ email usernames and passwords, it said in a May 24 news release (IR-2018-125). The scam targeted tax professionals in Iowa, Illinois, New Jersey, and North Carolina, and the agency said it also received reports about a Canadian accounting association.
