Internet Providers Limit Protections for Consumer Data, FTC Says

Internet service providers that also control content creation and offer other products such as home security are able to gather and share large pools of granular data about consumers while granting them limited privacy protections, according to a report from the Federal Trade Commission.

The amount of data that internet providers can collect and consolidate is “staggering,” FTC chair Lina Khan said at a meeting to release the report Thursday. Internet providers can track information including the websites customers visit and their location, as well as the shows they watch and the apps they use, the commission’s report found.
