Dating apps Grindr, OkCupid, and Tinder should be investigated for allegedly sharing customer data with advertisers in violation of European law, consumer groups told regulators.
The apps lacked permission or a legitimate interest to process data they collected, the Civil Liberties Union for Europe (Liberties) and at least 10 other consumer advocacy groups said in letters to seven privacy offices.
“Ordinary mobile users have no meaningful way to protect themselves or the society from the consequences of data exploitation and massive commercial surveillance,” Orsolya Reich, senior privacy officer at Liberties, said in a statement.
