General Motors Co. will pay $12.75 million to resolve claims it illegally sold hundreds of thousands of Californians’ location and driving data to data brokers.

General Motors is one of hundreds of companies registered as a data broker in California. Friday’s settlement marks the largest fine under the state’s privacy law and Attorney General Rob Bonta’s first action enforcing the state’s data minimization requirements that limit companies use of personal information.
