The FTC won’t bring enforcement actions against companies collecting kids’ data without parental consent for the sole purpose of using age verification technologies, the Federal Trade Commission said Wednesday in a policy statement.
The statement, which was approved 2-0, is aimed at providing clarity to companies as the agency considers updates to Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act regulation. The law requires companies that direct services to children under 13 or with actual knowledge of children under 13 using those services obtain parental consent before collecting kids’ data.
