The Federal Trade Commission warned 19 companies it may take action if they assist in making illegal robocalls.
The companies, which are voice over internet protocol (VoIP) service providers, risk violating an FTC rule against deceptive and abusive telemarketing practices, the commission said in letters. The FTC didn’t disclose the companies’ names.
The letters are among the actions the U.S. government is taking to crack down on illegal calls. The FTC can seek civil penalties and injunctions to stop violations of its Telemarketing Sales Rule.
