FTC Urged to Probe Childcare Apps for Potential Data Pitfalls

A digital rights group is urging Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan to probe childcare apps for privacy and security problems that may put kids’ information at risk.

Apps such as Brightwheel or HiMama often give parents of children enrolled in daycare and preschools updates on feedings, diaper changes, or other activities. But some apps are generating concern over how securely photos and other data are stored and whether certain information is being shared with sites like Facebook, according to a review by the nonprofit Electronic Frontier Foundation.
