FTC Touts $2.5 Million Settlement From Operators of ‘Free’ Gift Card Scam

A group of 12 defendants, operating companies in South Carolina and California have agreed to pay $2.5 million to resolve Federal Trade Commission allegations that they deceived consumers into believing they were eligible for free gift cards from major retailers and resold consumers’ personal information, according to two settlements announced Feb. 18 (FTC v. SubscriberBASE Holdings, Inc., N.D. Ill., No. 13-cv-1527, FTC v. SubscriberBASE Holdings, Inc., N.D. Ill., No. 13-cv-1527).

The settlements, approved by the court on Feb. 6, will resolve the complaint naming corporate and individual defendants:
