A proposed settlement filed Monday between the Federal Trade Commission and data broker Kochava Inc. would ban the company and its subsidiary Collective Data Solutions LLC from selling or licensing data associated with sensitive locations without individuals’ affirmative consent.
The FTC alleged in a 2022 complaint filed with the US District Court for the District of Idaho that Kochava collected information on customers, including their names, email addresses, home addresses, and phone numbers, and connected it with precise geolocation data. It then sold the data as part of a package of services that could be used identify individuals.
