The Federal Trade Commission should regulate artificial intelligence use to prevent consumer harms, the Electronic Privacy Information Center said in a petition for a rulemaking.
“The unregulated use of AI techniques has already caused serious harm to consumers, who are increasingly subject to opaque and unprovable decision-making in employment, credit, healthcare, housing, and criminal justice,” the group said.
The commission has the authority to issue rules under the FTC Act that define practices that are unfair or deceptive. A spokeswoman for the FTC confirmed the commission received the petition but declined further comment.
