FTC Orders Global Tel*Link to Secure Prison Message System Data

The Federal Trade Commission finalized an order with Global Tel*Link Corp. on Friday to settle allegations that the prison communications failed to secure the personal data of hundreds of thousands of users.

The finalized order requires Global Tel*Link and its two subsidiaries to implement a comprehensive data security program including multi-factor authentication and encryption. It also directs the company to minimize the amount of information it collects and requires the company to notify users of future security incidents that trigger local, state, or federal breach notification laws.
