FTC Moves Closer to Launching Consumer Data Privacy Rulemaking

The Federal Trade Commission is poised to take its first step toward writing consumer data protection rules that would govern businesses such as Alphabet Inc. and Meta Platforms Inc., according to sources familiar with the agency’s plans.

The commission plans to soon issue a notice to launch the data protection rulemaking, said the sources who requested anonymity.

Consumer groups have been pressing the FTC to begin the likely yearslong process of putting out privacy regulations as growing data collection and use fuels targeted advertising. The commission added the issue to its regulatory agenda late last year.
