H&R Block Fined by FTC for Coercing Customers to Overpay (2)

The Federal Trade Commission finalized an order Wednesday requiring tax preparer H&R Block Inc. to pay a $7 million settlement and make changes ahead of the 2025 tax filing season to resolve accusations it deployed deceptive practices to coerce consumers into overpaying for its products.

The FTC accused H&R Block in February of deleting customers’ previously submitted data, if taxpayers elected to downgrade H&R products, among other misleading practices. The settlement requires H&R Block to make it easier for consumers to downgrade products, and to stop deleting consumers’ previously entered information when they do downgrade.
