Federal Court Dismisses CFAA Claim Against Amazon for Secret Cookie Installation

Amazon.com is not liable under the federal Computer Fraud and Abuse Act for transferring cookies to website visitors’ computer hard drives because the visitors suffered no discernible harm from the transfer and whatever gain Amazon yielded did not change that, the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington held June 1 (Del Vecchio v. Amazon.com Inc., W.D. Wash., 2:11-cv-00366-RSL, 6/1/12).
