The Federal Communications Commission Oct. 17 approved final rules to create a Do-Not-Call registry specifically for public safety numbers to free up “911” phone lines and prevent diversion of critical first-responder resources used to provide emergency services. The rules will also prohibit the use of “robocalls”—prerecorded, autodialed calls—to contact phone numbers for police, firefighting, and ambulance services other than for emergency purposes. According to the FCC, thousands of unwanted robocalls are made to Public Safety Answering Points every day.
