Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center faces a patient’s proposed class action alleging that its lax cybersecurity practices enabled hackers to steal his sensitive medical records along with those of as many as 800,000 patients, leading criminals to target him for extortion.
The Seattle research hospital, which serves as the cancer center for the University of Washington, failed to implement data safeguards that could have prevented the incident or to offer crucial information to potential victims, according to the complaint filed Thursday in the US District Court for the Western District of Washington.
