EU Nations, Russia, Uruguay Agree to Update Data Protection Treaty

A group of European countries have signed an agreement to update a non-binding personal data treaty to include more types of information, such as biometric and genetic data.

The 21 signatories, including the U.K., Germany, France, and Russia, agreed Oct. 10 to update the Council of Europe’s set of rules and guidelines to protect privacy of individuals in global data transfers. The rules are in the Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data, also known as Convention 108.
