Equifax Inc. agreed to pay $1.5 million to the City of Chicago to settle claims that lax security led to a 2017 data breach.
The city had alleged Equifax violated consumer protection standards with the breach that exposed Social Security numbers, names, addresses, employment history, and financial data of 5.4 million Illinois residents.
A representative for Equifax didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
“Equifax could and should have prevented the data breach by implementing and maintaining reasonable safeguards, consistent with representations it made to the public in its marketing materials,” the city said in its statement.
