Equifax Informed FBI Days After Former CEO Learned of Data Breach

Equifax Inc. reported a massive data breach to the FBI two days after former CEO Richard Smith was made aware of the breach, Smith said in written congressional testimony released Oct. 2.

Smith’s testimony was released by the House Energy and Commerce Digital Commerce and Consumer Protection Subcommittee, which is scheduled to hear from Smith in person Oct. 3 on the breach of personal data of 143 million customers of the credit reporting company. The former CEO will also be appearing Oct. 4 before the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee.
