Equifax Canada’s Safeguards Found Lacking, Contributed to Breach

Equifax Canada Inc. and U.S.-based Equifax Inc.'s inadequate privacy and security safeguards contributed to the data breach that affected more than 143 million people globally, including 19,000 Canadians, Canada’s privacy commissioner said.

“Given the vast amounts of highly sensitive personal information Equifax holds, and its pivotal role in the financial sector as a credit reporting agency, it was completely unacceptable to find such significant shortcomings in the company’s privacy and security practices,” Canadian privacy commissioner Daniel Therrien said in an April 9 statement on his office’s investigatory findings.
