Education Tech Firm IXL Sued Over Collecting, Using Student Data

IXL Learning Inc. faces a putative class action filed by three Kansas families alleging the education technology company violated federal wiretap law by collecting and selling their children’s personal information without parental consent.

IXL, which contracts with schools nationwide to offer a range of digital educational services, fails to provide sufficient information for users to consent to its data practices and doesn’t obtain effective parental consent for use of children’s federally protected data, alleges the complaint filed Tuesday in the US District Court for the Northern District of California.
