Edtech Tools Gathering Data Must Guard Kids’ Privacy, FTC Warns

The Federal Trade Commission is warning makers of private-sector educational technology tools for kids to limit their collection and use of data to ensure compliance with the federal Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act.

The commission voted unanimously Thursday to approve a policy statement clarifying how COPPA applies to edtech tools that gather data about children who use them. Companies that violate the law can face fines from the FTC.
