DirecTV Impersonators Are Scamming Customers, New Lawsuits Say

AT&T Inc.-owned DirecTV LLC is suing two US companies for allegedly posing as the satellite-TV provider to scam its customers as part of an international crime scheme.

The accused fraudsters offer existing or potential DirecTV customers nonexistent promotional deals that require them to pay upfront with prepaid gift cards, according to separate federal lawsuits filed Tuesday in Texas and Maryland.

The fraud campaigns have harmed DirecTV’s business and reputation, the company alleged, with the scam generating at least 32 customer fraud complaints and a class action filed in Florida that has since been dismissed. Michigan’s attorney general filed a ...
