In the wake of high-profile data breaches at some of the world’s biggest companies, lawmakers and regulators are starting to take seriously protections for consumers’ online privacy. The California Consumer Privacy Act, which went into effect on Jan. 1, 2020, is the country’s first comprehensive law that gives users control over their own data - and it likely won’t be the last.
