States should prioritize the development of a digital driver’s license that Americans can use to prove who they are online, according to policy advice from a coalition of identity management-focused businesses.

Efforts so far have largely concentrated on in-person scenarios, like using a mobile phone to present a driver’s license at airport security, the Better Identity Coalition said in a state policy blueprint issued Tuesday. But there’s no way to use these state-issued credentials online, where identity theft is a growing problem, the blueprint says.
