Dashcam Provider Must Face Trucker’s Proposed BIPA Class Action

Cloud operations startup Samsara Inc. must face a truck driver’s proposed biometric privacy class action over the AI Dash Cam facial recognition software and sensors it provides for commercial fleets, an Illinois federal judge found.

The plaintiff sufficiently alleged violations of Illinois’ Biometric Information Privacy Act, Judge Sara L. Ellis wrote in an opinion filed Monday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

The court also needs a “fuller factual record” to consider Samsara Inc.'s preemption and dormant Commerce Clause arguments for dismissal, Ellis said.
