The French data protection authority CNIL fined Dailymotion 50,000 euros ($57,955) for failing to uphold its duty to secure private data, according to a statement published Aug. 2 on the authority’s website.
CNIL said the fine relates to a cyberattack on Dailymotion, the Paris-based video-sharing technology platform, that concerned 82.5 million email addresses and 18.3 million coded passwords.
Hackers were able to access the login details—stored on the GitHub platform—of an administrator account for the company’s database. Hackers then exploited a vulnerability found on Dailymotion’s platform code on GitHub and subsequently extracted users’ private data, according to CNIL.
