Companies Settle FTC Claims Over Privacy Shield Participation

Five companies accused of falsely claiming they could participate in a transatlantic data transfer pact have reached settlements with the Federal Trade Commission.

The agreements resolve allegations that the companies misrepresented that they were certified under the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield framework, the FTC announced Sept. 3. The voluntary program allows thousands of companies to transfer personal data from the European Union to the U.S. if they commit to abide by the framework’s principles.

The proposed settlements come as EU and U.S. government officials are set to participate in the third annual review of the Privacy Shield framework this month.
