Colonial Pipeline Beats Gas Station’s Ransomware Shutdown Claims

Colonial Pipeline Co. defeated claims that it was negligent in securing its computer networks resulting in a ransomware attack that shut down its 5,500 mile pipeline and created a sharp increase in gas prices for 11,000 gas stations, according to a federal court in Georgia.

Wilmington, Del., gas station EZ Mart 1 LLC filed a potential class action claiming that Colonial chose to shut down the pipeline because it wasn’t sure it could accurately bill for the fuel moving through its pipeline, not because the cybercriminals had reached its operational systems.
