Cleo Communications Sued Over Breach of Chicago Schools Data

Cleo Communications Inc. negligently failed to protect the personal information of more than 700,000 current and former students of the Chicago Public Schools that was exposed in a 2024 data breach, a proposed federal class action said.

Lead plaintiff Jewanna Ashley alleged that Cleo breached its duties under common law, contract law, industry standards, and state and federal law to implement reasonable and adequate data-security measures and provide timely notice of the incident.

Information exposed in the breach included names, dates of birth, gender, student ID numbers, and Medicaid ID numbers and program-eligibility information, according to a complaint filed Monday ...
