Car-Sharing Platform Sued Over Drivers’ Facial Data Collection

Getaround Inc. collected and shared its users’ biometric data with third parties without their consent, a proposed class action said.

The car-sharing platform’s data-retention and sharing practices violated Illinois’ Biometric Information Privacy Act, according to the complaint filed on Oct. 4 in the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

To set up profiles on the platform, through which individual car owners can rent their vehicles to others, users were prompted to upload pictures of their driver’s licenses and a video of themselves, the complaint said.
