California Privacy Agency Signals Heightened Regulatory Action

Privacy professionals are anticipating enforcement activity from California regulators to increase this year, especially as the California Privacy Protection Agency (CPPA) finishes building out its oversight unit.

Both the first-in-the-nation privacy agency and the state attorney general are tasked with ensuring companies comply with the California Consumer Privacy Act, which went into effect in 2020.

Attorneys are keeping much of their focus upon the new agency, which last month was able to start enforcing an updated version of the law and its subsequent regulations after an appellate court removed a one-year pause on them.
