California Privacy Protection Agency officials on Tuesday spelled out additional enforcement focuses, such as on dark patterns, subtle website design choices that discourage a user from selecting an opt-out option to protect their personal data.
The new priorities come as the first-in-the-nation privacy regulator completed its first year of enforcement powers that it gained last July.
The agency has been “very, very busy” with investigations over the last year, Deputy Director of Enforcement Michael Macko said. He did not go into details about those investigations in discussion in front of the agency’s board on Tuesday.
