California Privacy Agency Adopts New Data Broker Definition (1)

The California Privacy Protection Agency on Friday approved new rules that will expand who’s considered a data broker under state law, forcing them to register and comply with future data deletion requests.

California’s data broker registry currently lists more than 500 companies, including Experian, a major consumer credit reporting company. The registry serves as a clearinghouse on companies that amass and sell personal information to other businesses, given consumers are not directly interacting with or giving their data to brokers on their own.

Advertising groups and others are concerned the regulations would capture many businesses not typically considered brokers. ...
