California’s upcoming privacy law could pose legal headaches for education technology providers if the state doesn’t clarify parts that clash with existing student privacy laws, attorneys and ed tech professionals told Bloomberg Law.
The conflict could mean ed tech vendors—ranging from small startups to companies like Alphabet Inc.'s Google and Microsoft Corp.—risk violating one law or the other when deciding whether to access or delete student information. Ed tech professionals and the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA) are calling on California Attorney General Xavier Beccera to fix the situation.
