California Hotel Illegally Recorded Cellphone Calls, Suit Says

A Hilton hotel in Santa Monica, Calif. recorded thousands of people’s cellular telephone calls without warning or notification, in violation of California’s Invasion of Privacy Act, a proposed federal class action alleges.

John Maxton brought the suit in the US District Court for the Central District of California on behalf of California residents’ whose cellphone calls with the hotel were allegedly illegally recorded during the previous year.

CIPA prohibits intentionally recording any communications involving cellular and cordless telephones without notifying the other party. But the Hilton Santa Monica Hotel & Suites routinely recorded its calls without providing notification or getting ...
