California Government Forms New Unit To Prosecute Privacy Crimes, Educate Public

SACRAMENTO, Calif.—California is more than doubling the number of prosecutors enforcing privacy laws through a new Privacy Enforcement and Protection Unit in the state Department of Justice, Attorney General Kamala D. Harris (D) said July 19.

The new unit will focus on civil prosecution of state and federal privacy laws, as well as public education and outreach and building partnerships with the private sector. The number of prosecutors working on privacy enforcement is increasing from three part-time attorneys to six full-time attorneys, a spokeswoman for Harris told BNA.
