A California law that forces data brokers to register with the state could sweep in companies that are unaware of the requirement, putting them at risk of fines, privacy attorneys said.
The state attorney general has created a public registry under the law for companies that collect and sell data of consumers with whom they don’t have a “direct relationship.” But the law relies on the definition of “sale” of data from the landmark California Consumer Privacy Act, which has some companies questioning if they need to register, attorneys said,
