California Beefs Up Privacy For Immigrants, Abortion Seekers

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) on Sunday night signed into law two bills that provides privacy protections for undocumented immigrants and abortion seekers in California.

The two measures strengthen the California Consumer Privacy Act, already considered one of the strongest comprehensive privacy laws in the US. The Democratic-controlled legislature focused specifically on two groups that they feared red states could target with punitive measures.

The definition of sensitive personal information—which under state privacy law has enhanced protections that include the right for a consumer to restrict business use—now includes immigration status under one of the measures (A.B. 947). Supporters ...
