California Agency Calls for Opt-Out Privacy Process in Browsers

California Privacy Protection Agency board members on Friday directed their staff to develop state legislation that would require all web browsers, such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, to offer a feature that would allow a user to automatically opt out of sharing personal data for all sites visited.

The agency would have to recruit a lawmaker to sponsor a bill, which would likely trigger opposition from tech and business groups who argue it could radically restrict data collection and marketing of personal information for the state’s more than 39 million residents.
