Brokers Ask for Guardrails on California’s Data Deletion Tool

Data brokers urged California privacy officials to place strict guardrails on a planned mechanism that will allow state residents to more easily delete all their personal data collected by their companies.

The tool is part of a pioneering 2023 state law, named the Delete Act, that gives consumers more control over what data brokers — companies that make money by amassing and selling personal data — collect. California already has a data broker registry where an individual can go to each broker to request deletion, but the new mechanism will simplify the process with one single request.
