Bitcoin $1M Theft Discovered Too Late for Computer Fraud Claim

Two UK teens suspected of stealing $1 million in bitcoin from a Colorado man avoided a Computer Fraud and Abuse Act claim but must face other allegations in the man’s civil suit, a federal court in Colorado ruled.

Andrew Schober downloaded malware disguised as software in January 2018 from an online forum where the teens allegedly posted a link. The theft occurred when he copied a cryptocurrency wallet address, which the malware replaced with an address controlled by Benedict Thompson and Oliver Read, Schober alleges. The teens were computer science students at the time.
