BGOV OnPoint: Trump Weighing Options to Save TikTok

President-elect Donald Trump has indicated he’ll seek to delay enforcing a ban on TikTok, the popular video sharing app, that goes into effect Jan. 19.

The Supreme Court upheld an April 2024 law that required TikTok’s Chinese parent, ByteDance Ltd., to divest the app within 270 days or face removal in the US.

If enforced, tech companies could face massive fines for hosting and maintaining the app. The Biden administration signaled it would leave the decision to the incoming Trump administration, which has vowed to save the app.
