California Attorney General Xavier Becerra has proposed long-awaited compliance rules for the nation’s strongest data privacy law that kicks in next year.

Announcing draft regulations for the California Consumer Privacy Act Oct. 10, Becerra laid out boundaries for businesses that profit from the collection and distribution of user data, along with an outline of the tools available for consumers seeking protection from abuse of their personal information. The draft rules will undergo public scrutiny for the remainder of the year, with enforcement set to begin July 1.
