Amicus Briefs Pour in for NetChoice Suit Over Kids’ Privacy Law

A new California law aimed at protecting kids from manipulative and addictive app design doesn’t violate the First Amendment, a privacy group told a federal court, because it regulates how companies design their online services rather than requiring them to restrict their publishing activities.

Online services wouldn’t be forced to remove or demote content to comply with the obligations of the California Age-Appropriate Design Code, but rather to ensure they weren’t improperly using children’s data to target them with content in violation of the law, the Electronic Privacy Information Center said in a federal court filing.
