Amazon Pressed by Senate Democrat on Ring-Police Data Sharing

Sen. Ed Markey is urging Amazon.com Inc. to provide more details on how data collected from its Ring doorbells and cameras is shared with police and other agencies, including private security firms.

The Massachusetts Democrat raised concerns with Ring’s “invasive data collection and problematic engagement with police departments” in a Tuesday letter to Amazon Chief Executive Officer Andy Jassy.

Markey is especially interested in a service on Ring’s Neighbors app that allows police and fire departments to post local crime and safety alerts. The service also lets the departments make requests for user recordings to assist with an active investigation, ...
