Amazon Alexa Privacy Suit’s Registered User Wiretap Claims Axed

Amazon.com Inc. won partial dismissal of a proposed privacy class action alleging wiretap violations via its Alexa technology after a Washington federal judge found registered users had given prior consent to its interception of their oral communications.

Plaintiff Kaeli Garner’s Stored Communications Act claim is also dismissed because her attorneys didn’t respond to Amazon’s argument that it isn’t an “electronic communication service” under the law, Judge Robert S. Lasnik wrote in an order filed May 6 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington.
