23andMe $30 Million Settlement in Breach Suit Greenlit by Judge

A federal judge granted early approval to a $30 million settlement to resolve claims 23andMe Inc. failed to protect the privacy of millions of customers leading to a 2023 data breach.

The genetic testing company’s data breach exposed the sensitive data of more than six million customers, including genetic information, ancestry reports, ancestors’ birth locations and family names, and geographic location, according to the opinion.

Cybercriminals specifically targeted 23andMe customers of Ashkenazi Jewish and Chinese descent, the order said, offering their data for sale on the dark web.
