Science-Based Gene-Drug Interactions Outlined in New FDA List

The FDA is taking steps to prevent prescribing decisions based on genetic tests the agency believes fall short.

The new web-based resource announced Thursday from the Food and Drug Administration’s drug and device centers outlines what the agency considers to be legitimate interactions between certain drugs and a person’s genotype based on scientific evidence.

Edward Abrahams, president of the Personalized Medicine Coalition, said he hopes the publication of the Table on Pharmacogenetic Associations leads to more investment in linking therapies to diagnostics, which is the hallmark of personalized medicine.
