Sandoz Launches Authorized Generic of Famvir

Sandoz March 24 announced the introduction of its authorized generic version of Famvir (famciclovir) tablets in the United States, in 125 mg, 250 mg, and 500 mg strengths.

Famvir currently is marketed by Novartis Pharmaceuticals and Sandoz is the generic pharmaceuticals division of Novartis. An authorized generic drug is a branded prescription drug produced by the brand-name manufacturer and repackaged as a generic. Critics have said the intent of authorized generics is to undercut “true” generic competition (9 PLIR 234, 2/25/11).
